In League With The Arts

The Art League of Highlands-Cashiers’ August program will be given by local artist ML Carpenter-Bilbro.

The presentation, which begins at 5:00 P.M., August 28 at The Bascom, following social time at 4:30 P.M., will be a description of the basics of clay sculpture, covering both the firing method and the creation of a mold for bronze and resin editions.

A multimedia artist, her work includes painting and drawing as well as sculpture.  She says that her work is influenced by her environment as well as music, literature, and her general state of mind.

Her move to become a full-time Highlands resident in 2009 was a life change that was no accident.  In love with the area and the beautiful mountains, she had long planned this eventual move from her fast-paced studio in downtown Atlanta.  Since the move, she has involved herself in community affairs, being a past board member of the Rotary Club of Highlands, the Literacy Council of Highlands, and the Mountain Garden Club.  She has also participated in Big Brothers-Big Sisters, REACH and the Art League.

Ms. Carpenter’s education includes studies at the University of Kentucky and the University of Georgia.  Her education continued in Italy, where she studied the classic lost wax method of sculpture.  Her work is shown and collected throughout the US and abroad.  Pieces may be seen in such installations as the University of Kentucky, the University of Alabama, and Emory University as well as the JFK Plaza Lobby in New York City.

In love with the masters as well as contemporary geniuses, her work is a blend of both the old and the new.  Her passion for her work is evident in her finished pieces.

An accomplished teacher, she is available for workshops, private lessons, mentoring, and small classes from beginners to advanced.  She maintains a web site, and her local studio phone number is (828) 526-8833.
