HCP's Dearly Departed
5:00 am
The Highlands Cashiers Players begin their 2010-2011 season with “Dearly Departed,” one of the funniest and most popular plays the Players have ever produced. It runs August 19th through August 29th at the Martin-Lipscomb Performing Arts Center (PAC) in Highlands.
“Dearly Departed” is a hilarious Southern comedy set in a small town in Georgia. The plot centers on the Turpin family who are trying to get organized for Daddy Bud’s funeral. Son Ray-Bud is perturbed about rising costs, son Junior is having marital difficulties, little sister Delightful is assuaging her grief by continually snacking, and Aunt Marguerite is criticizing everything and everybody, most of all her lazy son Royce. Add to this a passel of other colorful characters, including a rather unconventional preacher, and you have a situation fraught with comic possibilities.
The cast includes 16 actors, some of whom performed in the earlier production in 2005, some who are new to the HCP stage. There’s also a choral group who will sing old fashioned hymns before the curtain rises. “Dearly Departed” is directed by Virginia Talbot and Tanji Armor and sponsored by Building Technology Services of Cashiers and Highlands.
Reservations will be taken the week before the play. Subscribers may call (828) 526-8084 on Thursday and Friday, August 12th and 13th, for reservations and preferred seating. Others may call, starting Saturday, August 14th. It’s not too late to become a subscriber. You get four plays for $65, a saving of $15 over the individual tickets, which are priced at $20.

Gisele was born in St. Eugene, Province of Quebec, Canada. A self taught artist, she began her career in calligraphic artwork before transitioning into the field of pastels and oils. Her extensive study and encounters with wildflowers and woodland inhabitants has inspired her devotion toward wildlife paintings. Her efforts have brought her closer to her goal of capturing the individual personality of each animal. Having exhibited in art shows over a decade, Gisele, with her husband Thomas, also an accomplished artist, and their bearded collie, Dickens, currently resides in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia where she creates her original works of art.

Thomas Barrett is unconventional in his approach to sculpting these unique and original one-of-a-kind dolls. “Being self-taught I find no boundaries using whatever materials I feel will accomplish the results I strive for.” Every hand, arm, body, head, shoe, flower, leaf are individually carved and sculptured, using paper, wood, string, wire, clay and a myriad of other items.

Put on your running and walking shoes: Old Edwards Inn & Spa will be hosting the Par 5K race from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Sept. 11th, which will benefit the Literacy Council of Highlands. A pancake breakfast will be given in the morning of Old Edwards Inn & Spa’s PAR 5K race, which will run from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, and will benefit the Literacy Council of Highlands. David Young, chef of the event, will be cooking up some delicious food for runners, walkers, volunteers and spectators. “We hope to provide a hearty breakfast that will include buttermilk pancakes, applewood smoked bacon, scrambled eggs and local stone ground grits,” he said. Participants will pay an entry fee of $30 until Aug. 31, and $35 after that date. The fee will cover a race shirt and packet, as well as a pancake breakfast after the race. Spectators can purchase a pancake breakfast as well. Young is not only excited about the breakfast and the race, but also about the cause it will be Par 5K race, breakfast to benefit Literacy Council of Highlands helping. “As a six-year resident of the area and a husband of a school teacher, I have seen firsthand the disadvantages some of our children face due to a lack of emphasis on education,” said Young. “The nature and the history of Appalachia is that of high unemployment, low education and poverty. In an area where so much affluence abounds, the irony is that the natives largely do not share in that. I think any effort to combat that problem, at any level, is very important.” The Literacy Council, a local non-profit organization located in the Peggy Crosby Center, helps children and adults to overcome their struggles with literacy.
