Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of the most creative and misunderstood theologians of the postmodern age. He was a Lutheran pastor, initially committed to pacifism. But as Hitler’s anti-Semitism overtook his native land, he moved to a more civilly resistant position. This lecture will outline and assess his theological shift from pacifism to protest and consider ways Bonhoeffer has been misrepresented. This historical topic remains relevant - how are Christian leaders in an age of democratic freedoms to respond to tyrants who manipulate the masses.
