Dedication Ceremony for the W.C. Coker Old Growth Forest at Highlands Biological Station
The Old-Growth Forest Network, a national organization dedicated to the preservation of protected, old-growth, native forests, will partner with the Highlands Biological Station for a momentous dedication ceremony for the W.C. Coker Old Growth Forest. Located between Lower Lake Road and Bowery Road, this 3.7-acre forest area represents a remarkable remnant of the “primeval forest” that once thrived on the Plateau before the 1930s and 40s timber harvesting. The forest consists of old-growth Eastern Hemlock, including some of the largest remaining Eastern Hemlock in the Eastern U.S. Many of the trees exceed 350 years in age, with the oldest reliably dated to 1761. The dedication ceremony aims to formally recognize and honor this unique ecosystem at the Highlands Biological Station.
Following the ceremony, Buzz Williams of the Chattooga Conservancy will lead a commemorative Zahner Conservation Lecture discussing old-growth forests and forest management practices.
