For author Michael Almond, the conflicts at the core of The Tannery continue to simmer just below the surface of modern American life. He’ll talk about his work and the themes that animate his writing with a pair of events at local libraries.
Murder and mayhem make their way to the Plateau in author Christopher Swann’s rural-noir A Fire in the Night. He’ll appear at Hudson Library at 12:30 P.M. Saturday, September 25, to talk about A Fire in the Night and his two previous novels.
The twin libraries celebrate new novels that resonate with this corner of Western North Carolina and celebrate the freedom to read controversial works that are under threat of removal.
Author Karen White’s new novel spotlights the residents of London during the Blitz and the way their experiences resonated through the decades. She’ll talk about The Last Night in London and her life as a writer in a pair of free presentations – July 9 and 10 at Albert-Carlton Cashiers Community Library and Hudson Library in Highlands.

Author Mary Alice Monroe will illuminate the timely and timeless lessons embedded within her new novel, The Summer of Lost and Found, with a pair of presentations, May 28 and 29.
Virginia Beach will talk about her new nonfiction book American Landmark: Charles Duell and the Rebirth of Middleton Place. Middleton Place is the birthplace of a Declaration of Independence signer and the home of a First Continental Congress president. It was also home to hundreds of men, women and children enslaved by the Middletons. American Landmark weaves together myriad biographical stories, introducing us to an array of protagonists – both white and Black – who have been associated with Middleton Place for the last three centuries.
Join us for the first Books & Bites event of the Summer 2022 season. Successful author Katherine Reay will talk about her latest historical fiction novel, The London House.
Highlands Hudson Library; Beloved author Mary Alice Monroe returns to Hudson Library to talk about her newest release, Search for Treasure. Lunch bites will be provided by the Hudson Library Board. Reservations required; call 828-526-3031 to reserve your seats.
Almond is scheduled to share his book and to speak at the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Library at a community event hosted by The Friends of the Library on October 22 at 3:00 P.M. He will also speak at a Books and Bites public event at the Highlands Hudson Library on October 23 at 12:30 P.M.
