At this time of the year, you’d normally find members of the Art League at the Highlands Rec Park on Thursday afternoons, volunteering for the Art League’s Children’s Summer Art Camp. This free eight-week program, started by the League in 2007 as a gift to area children, until now has been offered every summer since. This year, of course, is different, and for the first time since its inception, there is no ALHC Children’s Summer Art Camp, another casualty of the global virus. We all look forward to the camp’s resumption next year. The camp is a cooperative effort between the Art League that supplies the staff and materials and the Rec Park that provides the venue. Each week, the attendees work on individual art projects that the children take home, and also complete a group project presented to the Recreation Park at camp’s end. You’ll see those created over the years adorning the walls of the Civic Center lobby. The Art League is fortunate to count among its members Bonnie Abbott, who agreed to become the instructor for part of 2018 and the entire 2019 camp. Bonnie earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from James Madison University, and her Masters in Art Education from George Washington University.  During her 40-year career, she has taught ages four to 90. She is patently qualified to teach youngsters, with her patient approach to instruction that holds their attention. Bonnie encourages the children to express their own personalities with their creations. Art League volunteers for the 2019 camp were Susan Bauknight, Zach Claxton, Jan DeJong, Missy McIver and Lisa Richards, who all look forward to a happier 2021.
