The November installment of our Resident Artist Series will focus on providing you with all the basics you will need to know about using hand building techniques and the slab machine to make christmas ornaments, gnomes, and other related holiday projects. The class meets from 10am - 12pm/noon on November 8th, 10th, 15th, and 17th.
The Resident Artist Series in Clay is a program designed for students of all levels. Topics change monthly involving both wheel throwing and hand building techniques. Class tuition is $185/person and includes one 25lb bag of clay, Open Studio for the 2 weeks of class, glazing, and firing for projects made during class. The Western North Carolina Woodturners are a group of craftsmen committed to sharing and learning the art of woodturning. Through monthly meetings with demos and discussions, the Western North Carolina Woodturners create a fun and educational community of passionate turners in the Western North Carolina region.
The Western North Carolina Woodturners are a sanctioned American Association of Woodturners club. Club meetings consist of opening remarks, official club business, and demonstrations by club members.
Club membership has many advantages. The club participates in an AAW-certified mentor program where club members have access to experienced turners for guidance in the craft of woodturning. We also frequently features "Days at the Lathe", where members turn together in The Bascom Woodturning studio following the monthly meeting. Annual dues are only $25.00.*

We’re bringing The Harvest to Highlands! Gather with us as we celebrate the magic of wine country harvest season. Our bountiful lunch will feature hearty, classic French fare including Coq au Vin + Boeuf Bourguignon as well as 10 featured, Sommelier-selected wines. Part of Highlands Food and Wine Festival.

The Literacy & Learning Center will host a Golf Ball Drop fundraiser, where one lucky winner whose ball lands closest to the target will receive $5,000.
Festivities will begin at the park with live music, drinks, food, and fun games that the whole family can enjoy. At the end of the evening, golf balls will be dropped from a Highlands Fire Department truck ladder, and the ball closest to the target will win the grand prize.
Balls are available for $10 each and there is no limit to the number of balls one individual may purchase.

The Bascom’s Holiday Arts & Crafts Show provides a unique shopping experience on the plateau, showcasing a selection of high-quality handmade works by local and regional artists. We invite submission of works that are suitable for giving, whether or not they have an explicit holiday theme. The Selection Process Submission consists of two photographs, (each an image of a representative piece proposed by the applicant), and a brief description of the work and materials/techniques used, and number of works for sale, and price point range. Our selection committee will review works for their artistic quality, and marketability. There will be 14 spaces available. Deadline is October 22, midnight; applicants will be informed of the results of the committee’s decisions by no later than October 25, via email. Please read through this entire document and complete the application at the end. APPLICATION AND SHOW INFORMATION SHOW DATE & TIMES: The show will start promptly at 10AM on Saturday, November 19, 2022. Exhibiting Artists are required to be present and to maintain their exhibition space until 4PM. FORMAT: Exhibiting Artists will be assigned a display space on The Bascom terrace or porte cochere (two covered outdoor spaces). They will also be assigned an artist code which must be displayed along with the price on each item for sale. The Bascom will provide a central checkout station. A packaging station will be managed by The Bascom staff during the show. Special gift wrapping will be made available to purchasers for an additional fee. DISPLAY SPACE: Each Exhibiting Artist will have a 12’x12’ display space. A 6-foot folding table and two chairs will be provided in each space for the duration of the show. Please bring your own table covering. Exhibiting Artists may provide additional setup and displays for their space. If you will require electricity, you will need to provide your own extension cord. SETUP: Exhibiting Artists may set up their space from 7:00AM-9:30AM on Saturday, November 19. CLEANUP: Exhibiting Artists are required to remove all artwork and display materials from their booth. Additionally, all garbage, including food, must be disposed of in the containers provided. CONDUCT: All participants are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. PETS: The terrace is a pet friendly property, and some attendees may bring pets. Exhibiting Artists however, are not permitted to bring pets to avoid disruptions and to protect their artwork. We will provide signage if you would like to keep pets away from your display area. Service animals are permitted. SMOKING: The Bascom is a non-smoking campus. Exhibiting Artists must abide by this restriction. FOOD and BEVERAGE: You may bring your own food and beverage for the day; no alcohol is permitted. FEES & PAYMENT: There is no application fee. Exhibiting Artists will receive 60% commission of the Retail Price. The Bascom will remit North Carolina State Sales Tax. Exhibiting Artists will be paid by the 15th of December for sales made at the show and are responsible for providing accurate contact information to receive timely payment. A completed W9 must be on file before payment will be processed CANCELLATION POLICY: The Bascom reserves the rights to cancel the event within 24 hours of November 19, 2022, due to weather or any circumstance related to safety, public health, or any reasonable circumstance

This storefront decorating contest draws creative entries along and near Main St. to be enjoyed by all. Anyone may vote online for their favorite display for a chance to win a gift card. Anticipation will fill the mountain air as the community gathers in the park to enjoy treats and a program that includes live music and carols led by Silly Ridge, a display of children’s artwork and a reading of the Christmas story. Then, Santa arrives atop a firetruck to usher in the lighting of the park and Main St. Watch the park come alive with thousands of holiday lights that will remain throughout the season, along with ice skating and photo-op fun.

Kathy Manos Penn is--of course!--the books columnist at Highlands Newspaper. Be warned: Her mysteries are more addictive than your favorite Christmas cookies. She will be signing her latest titles right after the parade on December 3rd.
Everyone is cordially invited to a Christmas Carol Sing at Highlands First Presbyterian Church at 2pm on Saturday, December 3 after the Highlands Christmas Parade. If you enjoy singing familiar Christmas carols, you will definitely want to make this a part of your Christmas tradition. First Presbyterian Church is located at the corner of Main and Fifth Streets.
The parade starts at 3:00 P.M. but you’ll want to arrive early to park and find the perfect viewing spot. As in years past the parade marches up 107S from Cashiers School Road, turns left at the light down Highway 64, and ends by turning left on Frank Allen Road.
