Virginia Beach will talk about her new nonfiction book American Landmark: Charles Duell and the Rebirth of Middleton Place. Middleton Place is the birthplace of a Declaration of Independence signer and the home of a First Continental Congress president. It was also home to hundreds of men, women and children enslaved by the Middletons. American Landmark weaves together myriad biographical stories, introducing us to an array of protagonists – both white and Black – who have been associated with Middleton Place for the last three centuries.
The Highlands Biological Station (HBS) is a Hotspot for ecoEXPLORE, the NC Arboretum’s incentive-based citizen science program for children K-8. Bring the family to HBS’s Valentine Meadow (888 Horse Cove Rd) on June 18th between 1 & 4 PM to create a nature-themed craft! We’ll focus on bees that call the Plateau home in preparation for ecoEXPLORE’s Entomology Field Season.

Intertwined with her performance stories, Connie Regan-Blake will generously share ideas and tools she has developed and learned throughout her trailblazing storytelling career. Through partner exercises and a 'walk through memories', you will enjoy exploring events of your own life. Utilizing 'deep listening,' she will guide you in experiencing how the 5 senses and the 'colors' of the moment bring a story to life and connect you to your listeners. Whether your interests lie in telling stories to family on the front porch, or more effectively connection with staff and the public or performing for a group, you'll have a taste of the 'art & heart' of storytelling.
