Since the late nineteenth century, intercollegiate athletics have integrated themselves into the marrow of university life, reshuffling institutional priorities and becoming central to the identities of universities and their alumni. Since the 1980s, when a pivotal Supreme Court case and the innovative marketing of Nike and Reebok truly opened the floodgates of commercial money into college athletics, the academic personnel at universities have had to reorient themselves to an environment in which athletic success, with the accompanying cash, often trumps academic standing, prestige or accomplishment. How should this conflict of interest be managed, and by whom?
Over the decades, The Church of the Good Shepherd’s annual Bazaar has earned a regional reputation. It’s only natural that it’s mushroomed into the year-round Bazaar Barn, 118 US Hwy 64 West (at Shoppes on the Green).
Known as the “Cheers” of Bookstores, the Bookworm in Highlands is affiliated with the Hudson Library: all books are donated; all staff are volunteers; and all funds go to help support the library. More than a retail store, we are a community service offering carefully sorted donated books to provide the best quality at a used bookstore price.
As visitors and summer residents of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau return to the area for the season, the Cashiers Historical Society is proud to announce the return of their tours of The Zachary-Tolbert House.
