Just like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and the revelation that chocolate and peanut butter really do go together, the clever people at the Highlands Rec Department have combined two disparate elements — swimming and watching a movie – into something unexpectedly delightful.

On the first Friday of every month, grab a lounge chair or a pool noodle and check out their Dive-In Movie.

The Pool showed its first movie, “Hocus Pocus,” in October
of 2017.

Originally, movies were shown using a projector and a screen. In March 2018, a Colorado Timing System was installed. Used by the Highlands Swim Team, who had their first swim meet that April, the LED scoreboard can be used to display swim meet times, the daily time, and movies. The LED scoreboard measures six feet by four feet. Rather than waiting for sundown to use a projector screen, the board can be set to show the movie at a specific time, allowing for more precise scheduling.

The pool opens at 6:30 P.M. on movie nights, and the movie starts at 7:00. This month, they will be showing the original Disney movie “The Little Mermaid.”

Our local freshwater mermaid, Fyn, is extremely excited about it.

“Have you ever seen anything so wonderful in your life?” she says. Fyn plans on being there to see her favorite movie. If you have a mermaid tail of your own, you’re more than welcome to wear it!

Admission to the movie is $5 and includes a bag of popcorn. The water is kept between 82 and 83 degrees, so it’s always comfortable. If you’d rather sit on the side, there are lounge chairs available and heaters to keep you warm in the cooler months. For more information, call (828) 526-1595.
