This is the first in a series of articles on the amazing pool of performing talent on the Highlands’ club and restaurant scene. First up, Cy Timmons a favorite entertainer at Old Edwards Inn.

Cy Timmons, an accomplished musician who has opened for headliners like Joan Rivers and Tuck and Patty, says, “At 16 I played guitar as a hobby.  By age 23 I was getting paid for it.  I liked getting money for doing something that came so naturally.”

After Timmons settled into the idea of a life of performing, he quit his day job, said good-bye to a waning interest in pre-med, and became one helluva singer/guitarist.

Timmons was born in Alabama, but grew up in the Atlanta area.  He played gigs at small clubs five to six nights a week.  One night a member of The Kingston Trio, who had married an Atlanta gal, came to the club where Timmons was performing.

After attending a few shows, a friendship developed.  He told Timmons he needed to “get outta town!”

Timmons says, “He sent me to his condo in California.  I got my first job in Sausalito.  I met a fabulous voice teacher who taught a vocal style that she said would last a lifetime.”

And it did.  Decades later his vocals are still butter-smooth.

Cy’s brother was also in California writing scripts for “Grizzly Adams” and “The Waltons.” Talent runs in the family.

Over time, visits to kin in Atlanta fostered trips to the mountains for occasional respites.  He bought a cabin in Scaly in the ‘80s.  Preferring smaller venues, he now enjoys the welcoming luxury and exquisite acoustics of the OEI setting in which he performs his smooth, easy-on-the-ears selections.

If you like Michael Bublé and Diana Krall, you’ll love Cy Timmons.  Stop by OEI on a weekend evening to catch his show.  If you don’t know his style, then as he and Michael Bublé might sing, it’s because “I just haven’t met you yet!”
