Louis XIV of France (1643-1715) is one of the most iconic monarchs in European history. The ‘Sun King’ was responsible for the building of Versailles, the grandest of all palaces in early-modern Europe. Through his aggressive foreign policy he made France the most feared military power in Europe between the 1670s and the early years of the eighteenth century. He turned Paris and Versailles into Europe’s twin capitals of elegance and refinement. Through his domineering style of rule, he performed the role of kingship in ways that made other rulers envious (or afraid) and established the template for royal “absolutism.”
