This talk will be a short history of modern Israel and its geopolitical position in the Middle East. We will discuss its emergence from what originally was called “Palestine” to the promise of the Balfour Declaration 100 years ago, through the Wars of 1948, 1967 and 1973, to its economic and military dominance in the Middle East today. All political opinions will be respected. (SMSIA) Presenter: Ira Cooperman has worked as an intelligence analyst with the Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency and the military. He is an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War and a former member of the editorial staff of the Los Angeles Times. Since 2005, he has taught Road Scholar and Special Studies courses at the Chautauqua Institution and has lectured at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, State University of New York and Temple University.    Cost: $25/$35 Coordinator:  Ed Mawyer
