New Face At Hudson

Carlyn Morenus

Hudson Library is excited to welcome Highlands resident Carlyn Morenus as its new Branch Librarian.

Before getting her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, Carlyn had a musical career as a classical pianist and university professor, with her longest teaching stint being at Illinois State University in Bloomington.  The dramatic career shift was motivated by several things, but at the top of the list was a desire to live in Highlands full-time after being a seasonal resident for about 10 years.

Looking around, she noticed that there aren’t a whole lot of career opportunities for classical pianists in Highlands, but there is an outstanding library, and she decided to pursue a library degree with the dream of eventually being the librarian of – you guessed it – Hudson Library.  Carlyn and her husband Keith Barnett, who is a long-time Highlands resident, were both offered positions at the Macon County Public Library in Franklin last year.

Carlyn is excited to be at the helm of Hudson Library so soon after completing her degree, and her enthusiasm is contagious.

“I would love to see even more collaboration between the library and schools and other community organizations in Highlands,” she says. “Highlands is such a vibrant community, and I want the library to do whatever it can to contribute to that.”

Like any good librarian, Carlyn can’t be harassed into choosing one absolute favorite book, but these days she reads a lot in the juvenile and young adult genres.  When she isn’t working or reading, she likes to hike on the Bartram Trail near her home, play tennis badly (so she says), and she is a board game enthusiast.  Hudson Library, and the community of Highlands, will surely be enriched by Carlyn’s eclectic background and energy.

Stop by Hudson Library at 554 Main Street in Highlands to welcome Carlyn into the community, and maybe check out a book or DVD while you’re there.  The library is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 A.M.– 5:30 P.M., and Saturday from 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.  You can reach them by phone at (828) 526-3031, or browse their website at
