One question frequently asked by new residents to the HIghlands-Cashiers Plateau is, “What activities are available for my children?”

Thanks to The Boys & Girls Club of The Plateau, the answer is, “Lots!”

They officially opened their doors in 2014 and have continued to offer top notch programs for the youth in the Highlands and Cashiers areas. Their staff members are all involved in the community and come to the club via non-profit, camp, and youth development backgrounds.

The three senior staff all come to this from non-profit, youth development backgrounds, and their committed, part-time program staff are all Western Carolina University students studying myriad subjects and involved in a variety of sports teams and social organizations.

The club’s purpose is to enable all young people, especially those who need it most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. They accomplish this with structured programs focused on Academic Success, Healthy and Active Lifestyles, and Good Character and Leadership. Although some may think of the club as after-school care, it is much, much more than that.

This past summer The Boys & Girls Club of the Plateau offered day camps and throughout the school year feature programs such as Project Learn, Triple Play, and SMART Programming.

As a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, the club depends on philanthropic gifts, and on Saturday, September 16, rain or shine, they are holding their major fundraiser, The Baldaroo Music Festival. This outdoor festival is being held at beautiful Fairfield Lake at the base of Bald Rock Mountain in Sapphire Valley, in their stunning lakeside amphitheater. Gates open at 3:30 and the music starts at 4:30.

Headlining the festival is The Kurt Thomas Band, joined by Jay Drummonds, Hurricane Creek, and Madison Chance of Atlanta. There will be great food for sale and the entire evening is being capped off by a spectacular show of fireworks.
