The Overlooks of Highlands, NC

Maybe you want to enjoy the natural wonders of this tiny piece of Western North Carolina, but you’re just not ready to embark on a hike through the Forest Primeval or contemplate the entire suite of sensory experiences that comes with using a pit toilet. Not to worry, we’ve got some Easy Peasy Possibilities that’ll provide you with indelible memories for just a modicum of effort. All that’s required is for you to step out of your car – or, if even a modicum of effort is too much, look out your car’s window.

Blue Valley Overlook

Head out to the Blue Valley Overlook, just 3.5 miles from downtown Highlands on NC 106. Blue Valley gets its name from the natural haze that shades the valley and its surrounding carpet of mountains. The gentle hills seem to roll on forever.

Osage Overlook

For an awe-inspiring glimpse of the region as it must have been 100 years ago, visit the Osage Overlook and its spectacular views of Scaly and Osage Mountains. From Highlands, travel 5.7 miles on NC 106 to the Osage Overlook.

Whiteside Overlook

Whiteside Overlook, 5.5 miles from downtown Highlands on US 64, captures the majesty that has ensorcelled its audience since the time of the Cherokee. Whiteside Mountain, with its unmistakable Devil’s Courthouse, weaves an ancient magic that’ll leave you awed and humbled.

Satulah Overlook

Satulah Overlook offers spectacular views of Satulah Mountain, Hidden Falls and Blue Valley. You can also glimpse the 100-foot Lower Satulah Falls, still as mysterious as when the region’s first inhabitants saw it. Visit during high water with the leaves off for the best view of the actual waterfall; snow scenes, valley fog and fall color are best for the overall photographic potential.

From Highlands, proceed south on NC 28 for 3.6 miles. The pull-off will be on the right.

Sunset Rocks

Sunset Rocks is an easy hike from downtown Highlands, but since this entire section is devoted to easy natural experiences, we’ll let you in on a little-known secret: You can drive to the top. Sure, you might get dirty looks from the hikers who have to step aside to make way for your car, but you’ll arrive at the top without breaking into a sweat. The wonderful views of Highlands and Horse Cove at the top will relieve you of any embarrassment you may feel at causing families to scramble out of the path of your car.

Just head east on Main Street and the drive to the summit of Sunset Rocks is directly across from the Highlands Nature Center. When you’re at the top, the granite overlook to the right has a wonderful view overlooking the Town of Highlands. To the left, a narrow path through rhododendrons leads to Sunrise Rock and a great view of Horse Cove.
