American conservatives have often disagreed about what they want to conserve. For some, the important issues are moral: preserving the nuclear family, the family farm and the virtuous traditions of the republic. For others, preserving capitalism is the most important issue. But capitalism is an economic system that thrives on constant change, inventing new ways of doing traditional jobs and upsetting the old order in the name of efficiency and progress. This lecture on the history of American conservatism will explore ways in which these different ideas about conservatism have come into conflict with each other and with the equally long American liberal heritage.
