There's already so much to see in the Highlands Botanical Garden, from Trout Lilies to Bloodroot and Oconee Bells! Normally, our weekly garden tours don't begin until the end of May but we'd hate for spring to pass by without sharing these beauties with everyone. To experience a diversity of native spring wildflowers here in Highlands, join staff botanist Max Lanning every Monday and Friday at 1:00pm for a tour of the Botanical Garden. Meet at the Nature Center located at 930 Horse cove Road and be sure to bring your cameras! Please note that the Nature Center itself is closed until May, but you should be able to find Max easily.

Can't make it on Mondays or Fridays? Max is eager to work with you! Private group tours are available throughout the week by appointment and can be reserved by calling 828.526.0188.

Maestro 6pm – 8pm
Cy Timmons 8pm – close

As a young Alabama man born to a musical family, Cy Timmons was destined to have music in his veins. Everywhere he went Cy seemed to have a song resonating in his head.
Cy was thrilled when he discovered his dad’s guitar sitting in the back of a closet. It had been sitting idle for years but a new set of strings and the enthusiastic attention of a young music enthusiast gave the guitar new life. Once Cy felt that he had mastered this steel stringed acoustic guitar, he set his sights on an electric guitar. He lobbied his parents until he got the guitar he wanted as a gift for his nineteenth birthday. From the electric guitar Cy migrated to the classical guitar. That has been his mainstay from then on.
Over the years Cy has developed a repertoire of jazz, old standards, and contemporary pop, as well as his original compositions. Followers of Cy will attest to the fact that he has a special gift for invigorating you with his music. In addition to his music, Cy has a flair for comedic interaction. He’ll mellow you out with a song and then liven you up with a joke.
If you have been around Highlands for several years, you are sure to have heard Cy perform in one venue or another. He doesn’t limit himself to the Plateau either. Clubs on both the east and west coast have seen Cy perform as he has pursued his study of the guitar.
The soft melodic tones of Cy’s voice are the result of natural talent and studies with the late Judy Davis in Oakland, voice coach to many vocalists including Barbara Streisand. He has worked many musical venues in San Francisco and in Los Angeles. He was even the opening act for folks like Joan Rivers, Peter Nero, Al Jarreau and David Steinbereg.
Lucky for us, in 1970 Cy decided to move back to Atlanta and eventually opened Café Erewhon where he wowed audiences for eleven years before moving to Highlands, in 1993. He and his wife, Carolyn, reside in the Scaly Mountain community.
After playing a number of venues in our area Cy now can be heard exclusively at The Old Edwards Inn in The Hummingbird Lounge, on Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 p.m. until closing.
Come enjoy Cy’s melodious tones as you enjoy your favorite beverage. There’s nothing more enjoyable after a busy day, than to relax to the tunes of Cy and his guitar. To learn more about Cy go to www.cytimmonssings.com. You may reach Cy at (828) 526-4503 or write to him at P O Box 303 Scaly Mountain, N.C. 28775.

Highlands NC: The Other Darwin: The Remarkable Life of Alfred Russel Wallace

THE OTHER DARWIN:
The Remarkable Life and Times of Alfred
Russel Wallace
Alfred Russel Wallace was an amazing 19th century
naturalist who with Darwin co-discovered the
principle of natural selection. The largely self-taught
Wallace launched an audacious plan as a teenager
to explore the tropics and solve the mystery of the
origin of species. He actually realized his plan and
spent four years collecting in Amazonia only to lose
nearly all of his specimens and notebooks (and nearly
his life) when the ship burned and sank on the return trip home. Undaunted,
Wallace headed off to southeast Asia just a year later, spending a further eight
years traveling and collecting in the Malay Archipelago, modern-day Indonesia.
It was here that Wallace made his greatest discoveries. Widely considered the
father of the science of biogeography, Wallace discovered the line of demarcation between the zoological provinces of Indo-Australia and Asia,
today known as the Wallace Line, and he scooped Darwin by conceiving of
evolution by natural selection while in a malarial fever. By the end of his long
life, in 1913, Wallace was probably the most famous scientist in the world, yet
today he is barely remembered as a footnote to Darwin.
Presenter: James Costa, Ph.D., has been a popular CLE lecturer for several years. He
is Director of the Highlands Biological Station and Professor of Biology at Western
Carolina University. His recently published book is titled Darwin, The Annotated
Origin.
Date: Wednesday, May 23
Singer and force of nature Libby Whittemore launches the season in her inimitable way May 24th-27th. Libby’s performed at the Playhouse before and her style – a beguiling blend of Rosemary Clooney and Ethel Merman, leavened with a healthy dose of Southern Sass and hints of Patsy Cline – proved as irresistible as catnip to Highlands audiences. This return to the mountains promises to deliver the same dynamic style and wit that’s become
her hallmark.

CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE: Then and Now
This lecture will employ extensive visual images and explore the vocabulary of
classical architecture. The 2500 year old language of architectural details is
based on a flexible system of symbols that adapts
and endures as culture and technology change.
The first hour will introduce many basic elements
of classical architecture from the Greek, Roman
and Renaissance worlds, including the columnar
orders and their meaning. The second hour will
explore outstanding examples of current classical
design in America, Britain and Italy.
Presenter: Elizabeth Meredith Dowling is an
architectural historian and, until 2005, a registered
architect in Georgia. She received her Bachelor of
Architecture from Georgia Tech in 1971, a Master of
Architecture from the University of Illinois in 1972 and
a Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of
Pennsylvania in 1981. She now holds the title of Professor Emerita in Architecture at
Georgia Tech. She taught courses on Renaissance history and Classical design theory
and she developed the College of Architecture Summer Program in Italy and Greece.
Date: Wednesday, May 30
Time: 10:00-12:00
Place: Performing Arts Center
