Every year, we select a graduate student from Western North Carolina University to install his or her thesis exhibition at The Bascom. Frank Vickery, the honoree this year is no stranger to us. He has been with our institution as an intern and is currently The Bascomís Ceramics Program Manager. Frank has been selected for the quality of his work, his dedication to the field of ceramics and his enthusiastic ability to share his talent with others.

The Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center and The Jackson-Macon Conservation Alliance are teaming up for the Spring Gorge Cleanup on Saturday April 21st at 8:00am. Volunteers are greatly needed and appreciated. Breakfast will be served from 8:00am-8:30am, then the clean- up will begin. After the Clean-Up is complete lunch will be served. Volunteers will be given a T-shirt for participation. We strive to keep our community clean and beautiful, and welcome any help. Highlands Dialogue Announces its April 2012 Schedule
The Highlands Dialogue completes its Winter-Spring discussion series in April. Our discussions take place on Tuesdays at the Hudson Library from 10:00–11:30 a.m. The dates and subject of our discussion topics for April are listed below.
Dialogue discussion topics include great books, current events, and subjects of extreme whimsy. Everyone is invited to attend and encouraged to participate in our discussions—our only request is that you come with an exploring mind and read the session’s material before attending the discussion (readings are distributed by e-mail or at a previous session). Even if you are not able to attend all of our discussions, you are encouraged to attend as often as you are able.

pring is here and that means more moderate temperatures, wildflowers in bloom and time for Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust to start their popular Eco Tours. This year HCLT will host seven tours, all open to the public. The 2012 season is kicking off and you are invited to join them on Friday, April 20th for a walk on the historic Kelsey Trail.
Hikers will walk the existing historic trail and explore several other new trails recently constructed on Land Trust properties. You will be in good hands and should see some spring wildflowers on this trip led by Botanist Dr. Gary Wein and Herpetologist Kyle Pursel. This moderate hike begins at 10:00 am and should be done by 1:30 pm. New friends may join for $35 which includes this outing, lunch and a HCLT membership! HCLT members are invited to attend for a $5 donation to help cover the cost of lunch. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (828) 526-1111 or emailing Julie.hitrust@earthlink.net.

HPAS bird walk around The Bascom in Highlands at 7:30 am, followed by a guided tour of the 'Chicks" exhibit at the museum.

HPAS birding outing at Southern Highlands Reserve Gardens at 7:30 am. Must register in advance.
