Scholarship Fund Golf Classic

Each year the Town of Highlands and local businesses host the annual Town of Highlands Scholarship Fund Golf Classic.  This year’s tournament, held on Thursday, October 19, is being staged by Wildcat Cliffs Country Club.

Now in its 42nd year, this tournament is the largest fund raiser of the year and one that participants eagerly look forward to. For $150 per player golfers can enjoy a day on the greens while helping local students achieve their dreams of obtaining a higher education. Breakfast is included prior to the 8:00 shotgun start, as well as cocktails and lunch at the awards ceremony which follows. Golfers play in teams of four.  Bring your own foursome to play or sign up as an individual and be assigned to a group.

The Town of Highlands Scholarship Fund was the vision of several Highlanders, including Jack Taylor and Jack Broadway, who wanted to ensure that students from Highlands School had the means to pursue their goals of higher education. The first scholarship was awarded in 1975 to Leigh James who still remembers, “being totally overwhelmed because it meant I could attend the college of my dreams – the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It was the icing on the cake that completed my financial aid package.”

Leigh still keeps her award letter as a reminder of how much the scholarship meant.

Since inception the endowment has grown and more and more students continue to benefit from scholarships ranging from $300 to $1,500 with each annual application.
