A Comedy Tonight!

This July, Highlands Playhouse will bring you a show inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus.

Broadway’s take on this style of comedy yielded “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum.”  Balancing a story that is witty while bawdy, “Forum” is both light and fast-paced, and possibly one of the funniest musicals ever written.  It brings you into the life of Pseudolus – a crafty slave looking to find his freedom.  He struggles to help his young master, Hero, win the hand of the girl next door.  Stephen Sondheim’s joyous, musical romp through Rome has desperate lovers, scheming neighbors, and secrets behind every toga.  The energetic plot twists that unfold harken back to an era of vaudeville and since opening in 1962, this Sondheim classic has won many accolades – including nine Tony Awards.

“Forum” runs from July 13 through July 29 with 8:00 P.M. shows Wednesdays through Saturdays, along with matinees at 2:00 P.M. on Saturdays and Sundays.  Tickets are $38 each and are available at highlandsplayhouse.org.  They may also be purchased through the box office at 362 Oak Street or by phone at (828) 526-2695.
